Yanmar has unveiled a prototype of an electric work machine with advanced force control at the Construction DX Challenge 2023, organised by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism.

\n\n

Developed in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Space Exploration Innovation Hub Centre, the large SEA (Series Elastic Actuator) was part of a prototype for the next-generation work machine under the Moonshot Research and Development Programme.

\n\n

Yanmar has implemented force control capabilities, a challenge for conventional hydraulic systems. Using the SEA composed of an electric motor, reducer, and spring, the functionality was implemented in an electric mini excavator.

\n\n

This technology aims to automate fine manual tasks, addressing labour shortages at construction sites. Moving forward, the company plans to conduct further verification to realise the practical applications of next-generation work machines in construction sites and similar environments.

\n\n

Aligned with the Yanmar Green Challenge 2050, the company continues its commitment to achieving a sustainable society, contributing to customers’ decarbonisation efforts through ongoing developments in electrification and other forward-looking technologies.

\n\n

For this electric work machine prototype, the large SEA is mounted on a Yanmar ViO25 mini excavator in the 3-t class. Its rate load during lifting is 209 kg.

Eight new models, with operating weights from 1.7 to 5.5 t, will join the recently unveiled HX10A Twin Drive micro excavator and the range-topping HX85A in a totally revitalised line of Hyundai mini excavators.

\n\n

Three of the machines – the HX35Az, HX40A and HX48Az –have already been recognised as winners of the Red Dot Design Award, from Design Zentrum Nordhein Westfalen in Germany.

\n\n

The design centres around the Tiger Eye lighting theme at the rear of the machines, though the excavators have also been praised for their eco-friendly features and the ease of operation. All Hyundai mini excavators now benefit from an EU Stage V compliant diesel engine, reducing exhaust emissions and boosting fuel economy for the customer.

\n\n

The revised colour scheme includes a grey front attachment, in line with Hyundai’s heavier excavators and wheeled loaders. At the rear, the robust, yet clean lines give an impression of sturdy construction and exceptional build quality.

\n\n

All models over 4-t operating weight are equipped with a revised hydraulic system, featuring Bosch-Rexroth load-sensing controls and a variable displacement pump. This contributes to smoother operation and faster response to operator input. Load-independent movement of hydraulic functions provides easy multi-tasking and increased productivity.

\n\n

The Hyundai mini excavators come with safety valves on main boom, dipper arm and dozer blade hydraulic cylinders, boosting safe operation. They are also equipped with optional quick-coupler piping. Extendable undercarriages and dozer blades on the HX17A and HX19A models deliver increased stability for heavy digging and lifting, while optional angled blades are offered on models above 3.5 t.

\n\n

Long and short dipper arms are available, along with heavier counterweights on some models. A rearview camera is also an option on excavators over 4-t operating weight. Six of the eight new models will be on show at bauma.

\n\n

“As the winner of this year’s Red Dot Design Award, we are very happy to be able to showcase the design of this new mini excavator range at the bauma exhibition,” said Peter Sebold, Hyundai’s product manager for mini excavators.

\n\n

Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, Japanese manufacturer Komatsu has unveiled a fully electric (non-hydraulic drive) remote-controlled mini excavator, which represents the company’s next-generation concept machine for the future.

\n\n

This battery-powered, 3-t-class machine offers a bucket capacity of 0.09 cu m and rear-swing radius of 970 mm. It measures 4,750 mm long, 1,740 mm wide and 1,685 mm high.

\n\n

The machine is designed to lay the foundations for commercialisation of fully electric construction equipment of the future, said Komatsu. It incorporates new technologies, including lithium-ion batteries and electric cylinders which utilise no hydraulics.

\n\n

Thanks to its full-electric power, the eco-friendly mini excavator generates no exhaust gas, noise or heat, and provides a maintenance-free operation since there is no hydraulic equipment. It is suitable for use in confined and dangerous sites, such as for indoor demolition and rescue work from disasters.

\n\n

In addition, the machine does not require an operator. A vehicle controller and operational device are connected via wireless LAN, enabling remote control operations under any work environment.

\n\n

In 2020, Komatsu launched its PC30E-5 electric mini excavators (hydraulic drive) in Japan, and also plans to introduce electric mini excavators (hydraulic drive) after equipping them with the lithium-ion battery system used in the concept machine for Europe in 2022. Komatsu said it is working to not only accelerate the speed of commercialising construction equipment with little environmental impact, but also further anchor them into the future.

Honda Motor Co Ltd and Komatsu Ltd have commenced the joint development to electrify Komatsu micro excavators using the Honda mobile power pack (MPP) - a swappable battery developed by Honda - and to establish a battery-sharing system for the civil engineering and construction industry.

\n\n

Komatsu micro excavators include the PC01, PC05 and PC09 mini excavator models. The PC01 is believed to be the world’s smallest riding excavator, featuring an engine size of 600 CC or below, and one of Komatsu’s long-time best seller products.

\n\n

Both Honda and Komatsu have been at the forefront of the industry in taking initiatives to develop products with low environmental impact. Honda has been expanding the line-up of products powered by MPPs, while Komatsu achieved the world’s first market introduction of hybrid hydraulic excavators in 2008, and the launch of Komatsu PC30E-5 mini electric excavator (hydraulic drive) for rental use in Japan in April 2020.

\n\n

Through this latest joint development, the two companies aim to electrify the Komatsu PC01 micro excavator by equipping it with Honda MPPs and an electrified power unit (eGX). The excavator is most likely to be used in a variety of applications near people, trees, flowers and ornamental plants, including pipe-laying, landscaping and agricultural and livestock work.

\n\n

Honda and Komatsu plan to introduce the electric Komatsu PC01 before the end of the current fiscal year, ending 31 March 2022.

\n\n

In addition to significantly reducing noise and exhaust heat, electrification of the micro excavator will minimise its environmental impact due to zero exhaust gas emission. This in turn enables users to work comfortably in various indoor and outdoor work environments.

\n\n

Thanks to the innovative features of MPP as a swappable battery, users can also operate the electric equipment continuously without waiting for an MPP to recharge. By powering Komatsu equipment with Honda MPPs, both companies strive to make energy supply easier and offer greater convenience for customers.

\n\n

After the market introduction of the electric micro excavator, Honda and Komatsu will undertake demonstration testing of a structure to supply MPPs to civil engineering and construction sites, and also enhance the convenience of electric construction machinery and equipment by providing after-sales services, including a battery swapping system.

\n\n

Further down the road, the two companies will conduct a joint development to electrify other micro excavator models as well as mini excavator models with operating weights of up to 1 t. Moreover, they will jointly explore possibilities for MPP-based electrification of a wide range of equipment used at civil engineering and construction sites and introducing such electric products to markets outside Japan.
